Several directions are being explored to push the current optical clocks limits even further, seeking to exploit higher resonant frequencies. Such frequencies are offered by electronic transitions in highly charged ions (path explored at LKB) or in observable nuclear transitions, for example in the ²²⁹Th⁺ ion.
