« MetroCom-I: Lien de Communication Optique en Espace-Libre à 10 Gbps pour la métrologie du Temps et de la Distance / MetroCom-I: 10 Gbps Free-Space Optical Communication link for Time and Distance Metrology »
|
Free-Space Optical (FSO) links, notably Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) systems, emerges as efficient alternative to traditional free-space RF techniques for Ground-Space applications. Motivated by the increasing demand for accurate ranging and synchronization in geodesy, space navigation, and fundamental physics, we suggest the use of FSO Communication (FSOC) or laser communication (lasercom) links, leveraging high data-rate telecom technology, to enhance time and distance metrological performance, in complement to SLR systems. Rapid improvement on data-debit of ground-space lasercom link enable the use of 10 Gbps telecom signal to achieve an absolute, high sensitivity and accuracy time/distance measurement for ground-space link.My thesis focuses on the development, implementation, and characterization of a novel time/distance metrology technique based on FSOC link, "MetroCom". The MetroCom project relies on transmitting 10 Gbps modulated optical signals over free-space channel to achieve few tens of fs timing (few µm in distance) sensitivity over both short and long-term. A high-resolution absolute distance measurement is expected through a combination of two methods: phase measurement from an OOK (On-Off keying) configuration and Time-of-Flight (ToF) measurement via PRBS (Pseudo-Random Binary Sequence) modulation, generated by an advanced signal synthesizer STC with a low-cost SFP COTS fiber telecom module. After implementing a calibration sub-system, an indoor system characterization was performed. Several systematic errors were identified, modeled, and mitigated. A preliminary ground-to-ground experiment (MetroCom-I) was conducted between MeO telescope and a fixed target at Calern summit over a 2 × 2.5 km folded freespace path. The link, associated with a Tip-tilt stabilisation, is successfully established, achieving timing stability of a few tens of femtoseconds from sub-ms to second integration time. The results demonstrate an accurate characterization of atmospheric turbulence, with timing jitter consistent with turbulence theoretical models such as Greenwood-Tarazano, as well as long-term drift confirmed by propagation delay variations in agreement with refractive index fluctuation estimates. The work establishes MetroCom as a competitive and scalable FSOC-based technique for potential optical time/frequency transfer and provides a valid basis for future extensions toward ground-to-space links, supporting to the SLR community in meeting the GGOS performance target of sub-mm accuracy.

Christophe Daussy (LPL), lauréat du prix Jean Perrin 2024
|

Journal of the Optical Society of America B Vol. 42, Issue 11, pp. 2429-2435 (2025)

Abstract: We present a detailed analysis of the end-user performance of the metrological signal at 1542 nm disseminated by the French national fibre network Refimeve, about 1000 km from the source. By the mean of a local ultrastable laser at 729 nm and a frequency comb, we are able to carry out stability and phase noise measurements of the signal with respect to the local laser. With a focus on phase noise analysis we identify different timescales of interest for the use of this signal in optical frequency metrology.
