Alain Brillet et Thibault Damour lauréats 2017 d’une double médaille d’or du CNRS

Le CNRS a attribué pour 2017 deux médailles d’or aux physiciens Alain Brillet et Thibault Damour qui sont récompensés pour leurs contributions majeures à la détection des ondes gravitationnelles. Les mesures de précision extrême sont à l’honneur avec cette récompense prestigieuse puisque Alain Brillet, qui est directeur de recherche émérite CNRS à ARTEMIS (laboratoire membre de FIRST-TF), est expert de la stabilisation des lasers et de leur utilisation dans les détecteurs interférométriques d’ondes gravitationnelles.

International symposium “Worlds of Entanglement”

On September 29–30, 2017 at Free University of Brussels (VUB).

The Centre Leo Apostel for Interdisciplinary Studies (CLEA) organizes this symposium which is the natural continuation of past events, in particular the “Einstein meets Magritte” conference (1995), and the “Times of Entanglement” symposium (2010), which brought together some of the world’s most renowned thinkers, to develop an interdisciplinary dialogue about fundamental issues of science and society.

Soutenance de thèse de Théo Laudat

4 octobre 2017 à l’Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris.

Théo Laudat soutiendra sa thèse de doctorat sur le sujet “Spontaneous spin squeezing in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate trapped on an atom chip”, préparée au SYRTE sous la direction de Noel Dimarcq et encadrée par Peter Rosenbusch, Carlos Garrido Alzar et Jakob Reichel.

Journée scientifique « La seconde atomique a 50 ans »

13 octobre 2017 à l’Observatoire de Paris.

Il y a 50 ans, en octobre 1967, la Treizième Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures décida de redéfinir l’unité de temps du Système International d’unités (SI), la seconde, à partir de la fréquence d’une transition de l’atome de césium.

Cette journée est ouverte à un large public intéressé par les définitions de la seconde et le SI, les échelles de temps et les applications des références de temps-fréquence.

Soutenance de Hélène Fleurbaey

 26 octobre 2017 à l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris).

Hélène Fleurbaey soutiendra sa thèse sur le sujet “Métrologie de la fréquence de transition 1S–3S dans l’hydrogène : contribution au débat sur le rayon de charge du proton”, préparée au LKB sous la direction de François Nez.

Research or Higher research scientist or research scientist in Optical frequency metrology

NPL (Teddington, United Kingdom).

Join NPL’s Time and Frequency group to work on optical frequency measurement techniques based on femtosecond combs. Development and optimisation of a continuously operating universal synthesizer based on a femtosecond comb referenced to a state-of-the-art ultrastable laser system. This new laser system will be a central reference point for NPL’s optical clocks, providing high stability optical and microwave signals to probe the clock transitions as well as enabling the different clocks to be compared with the highest possible stability and accuracy.

Experimental physicists with interests in cold atoms and ions, quantum optics, hybrid atomic/condensed matter systems, NV centres, optomechanics, superconducting devices, quantum sensors or related areas, who have a strong research background and the ability to develop an independent research direction related to Quantum Physics/Technology. Our research focuses on ultra-intense electron and x-ray sources for directly observing atomic motions during primary events, and ultrafast imaging over the relevant length and time scales to come to new levels of understanding of the interplay between structure and dynamics.
